Will I Succeed?, Part 7

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. (Joshua 1:8, NASB)

Tom Watson had just posted one of the lower rounds Sunday morning at Royal St. George’s, repeating his feat of the previous day to the amazement of Curtis Strange, Paul Azinger and his fellow commentators. The rain, wind and occasional squalls had forced scores into the high seventies and eighties. Tom Watson, at 61, had turned in 72-72.

The five-time champion arrived at the stone and wood-paneled interview room dressed in a blue blazer, bright yellow shirt and patterned blue and yellow tie.

His friends had dubbed him the greatest links golfer of all time, a title few would question. He sat there before the large window above the course answering question after question.

Listening to the grand master was entertaining education. When asked about the difference in play between the oceans, he revealed at least one secret to his success.

“In the breeze, swing with ease,” he said.

The moment he said it, I pictured his unrushed swing on the eighteenth fairway the day before. Almost effortless.

Some golfers know nothing of this law of links golf. But those that have failed to learn it have failed to succeed in links golf. As Billy Casper told me once, “Don’t fight the elements, work with them.”

Likewise, God’s people must know and follow God’s laws to succeed in life (see especially Matthew 22:34-40).

Jesus told a story about two sons a father had asked to work in a vineyard. The first son said, “I will not.” Later he regretted it and went. The second son said, “I will,” but he did not go.

Then Jesus asked, “Which one did the will of the father?”

True success equates to doing the will of the Father. It’s not a mystery.

It all boils down to this: “Do according to all that is written in it.”
