Well Said

September 9, 2015

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. (Psalm 100:5, NIV)

Playing golf with my wife and another couple the other day, we started paying attention to all the different sayings we use on the golf course. Many of them are encouraging, like these:

“Good shot!”

“Nice swing!”

“Go in the hole!”

“Smooth!”

Others are meant to cheer us up with a note of humor. I’m sure you’ve heard, “A blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.” In fact, you’ve probably said that one to yourself!

Here was a new one for me, after a shot that wasn’t great but could have been worse: “It’s better than a sharp stick in the eye!” When I asked my friend where she’d learned it, she said her mom would say that when my friend was a kid growing up.

I am sure you know other encouraging golf course expressions that many of our readers have never heard before. One of the things I love about golf is the way it often parallels what we find in the Bible. Sure enough, the Scriptures contain so many truths we can use to encourage one another. Look at a few:

“God is good!”

“God hears our prayers.”

“God knows our every need.”

“If God is for us, who can be against us?”

“God is all-knowing and all-powerful.”

“Jesus loves you.”

While these are not all exact phrases from Scripture, the truth of each about God is found there. And that is what’s so fantastic! In golf, the best we can do is offer encouragement based on ourselves. While you may be right in telling me “nice shot” this time, there’s no knowing when I’ll be able to pull it off again. But when we encourage one another with truths about who God is and how he sees us and relates to us, we are building each another up by stating his unwavering characteristics. In adoring him, we encourage each other!

So let me suggest that you take verses like Psalm 100:5 to heart, not only for yourself but for others. Learning passages like this equips you to be an excellent encourager, one who lifts up others by lifting up our great God. Keep the golf sayings going, but more importantly, keep the God sayings going to your friends and family!
