CHAMPIONS CHOOSE A HIGHER PURPOSE
"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God…" (James 1:5, NIV)
My old University of Houston teammate, Gary Wright, and I arrived at the Castle Pines Golf Club last
Friday just as the sirens sounded and play was suspended during the second round of The International.
We found shelter in the clubhouse just before the clouds poured out rivers of water, flooding the
greens and bunkers. Tom Lehman, the U.S. Ryder Cup Captain this year, who we had come to watch, was one of the players forced off the course.
I met with him in one of the 12-foot square cubicles of the locker room as the thunderstorm darkened
the course. Tom had more on his mind than the storm; he was pondering an important decision. This week, during the PGA Championship, he will make the final two choices for his team. Should he qualify
himself, the decision will be even more complicated.
"What can we do for you, Tom?" I asked. I sensed he was feeling pressure to make the right
choice.
"You can pray I will have wisdom," Tom said.
One of the great benefits of following Jesus is the promise God gives to all his children: "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all."
You may be on the throes of an important decision now, or will be sometime in the near future. Follow
the Ryder Cup captain's example. Ask for the wisdom from above, and if you have a moment pray for Tom this week.
