GLORY TO GLORY

...being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself... (Philippians 2:7-8, NIV)

Are you singing these days, lifting your voice with family and friends in celebration of the coming of our Lord? If so, you’ve probably sung these words already this season:

Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

It’s easy to dismiss so many trappings of Christmas. Where we find ourselves in trouble is when we dismiss words like these, lifted from the beloved carol, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.”

We celebrate the coming of Christ on this day we call Christmas because God Himself came to be with us. That the Almighty God would make Himself available in the flesh is an overwhelming idea in itself.

But it is not so much that God was here that made His coming special. It is what He did in the form of Jesus of Nazareth. It is what He came to do.

Jesus was born for a reason.

Coming from glory, He laid it by. In fact, He traded it for shame and suffering. He traded the life He came to live for the death He came to die.

Then He rose. Here, His purpose was accomplished. He allowed that humanity would not have to choose to suffer eternal death. He allowed that humanity could be raised imperishable. He allowed that we could do what He said we must do: be born again.

And in doing all this He returned to His own position of glory. The King reigns.

Of this we sing.
