WHATCHA DOIN’?

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. (Colossians 3:23-24, NASB)

“Whatcha doin?” I love that phrase. It reminds me of an old college buddy from the deep South whose greeting was always, “Whatca doin’?” He said it in such a slow, deliberate drawl that it sounded as if he had marbles in his mouth.

We recently had our grandson here for a few weeks earlier this summer, and he would ask the question a lot. “Whatcha doin’?” We would answer, “Going to run errands,” “Going to play golf,” “Getting ready to mow the yard.” He was curious and wanted to be a part of what was going on.

Have you ever thought about God asking us that question? He definitely wants to be a part of what we are doing. He loves us so much, and He wants to be with us in all we do, not just be a part of a Sunday morning service.

I was convicted as I was thinking about what some of our truthful answers might be to God concerning this question, “Whatcha doin’?”: “Oh, I’m playing golf and getting so upset when I don’t hit every shot perfect the way I wanted to.” “I am eating all this fried food and eating more than I should.” “I am arguing with my spouse.” “I am so busy today that I don’t have time to think about You, much less spend valuable time worshipping You.”

Our answers reflect our priority. We get deluded and derailed by Satan when we think our priority is making more money to build a bigger house and go on more vacations because we have earned it. We rationalize our answer into the security issue. “Well, I must provide for my family and take care of these responsibilities so we won’t be a burden to anyone. My career and our family are important.”

Yes, we can call many attentions in life “important.” But it is also important to be grateful to our Lord and Savior, the very One who gave us the ability to have a career and blessed us with family as a gift. Jesus said it best, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NASB)

These things will be added to you. Not either/or, but all we desire will be added. C.S. Lewis said, “Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you will get neither.”

Best practice lies in this: considering our top priority and being careful to ask why we spend time doing what we do. For the follower of Christ, it is all about God. There is no difference between the sacred and the secular. Everything we do can glorify God. If done correctly, even peeling potatoes when it is done for God can be a blessing to us and to Him. God designed us this way.

Do you know what brings glory to God? A fully committed, obedient believer who thinks of God in all he or she does. It is not what we do, but why we do it. So when God asks you, “Whatcha doin’?” you can respond, “I am using all these gifts You have given me to bring glory to You. I was just thinking about You, and how grateful I am that You chose me.” God loves us when we do it all for and with Him.
