MENTORS AND PROTÉGÉS

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. (Hebrews 10:24, NIV)

Johnny Arreaga made such an impression on the young David Cook that when the he grew into his life as a father, a sport psychologist and finally an author, it was “Johnny” who became the central character in Dr. Cook’s novel, Golf’s Sacred Journey, releasing tonight as the feature film, Seven Days in Utopia.

Dr. Cook, an old friend of Links Players, is adamant in his writings and workshops: cross-mentoring plays a critical role in the developing life of a man or woman who desires to grow not only as a physical or emotional or relational person, but as one who is intensely spiritual, focused on the person, work and will of God.

There will always be the truly wise among us, the “Johnnys” of God’s kingdom, who know Scripture and know life and who deeply understand the convergence of the two. When we find someone like this, they become like the legendary math teacher Jaime Escalante—they challenge and equip us to “stand and deliver.”

But most of us are more likely to run into people much like ourselves, people whose weaknesses sometimes rule over their strengths, people who are doing their best to keep an eye on Scripture when they make their choices day to day. Sometimes, they are hard-pressed when they are asked to “consider” how they may encourage others to do the right thing. And yet, God asks us to hang out with these people.

Let’s say that life is a quest. We are supposed to find God and discover what He is wanting to do in us. That’s not a bad gig, for such a quest holds much purpose. But how hard it would be to do that alone!

The good news is that you don’t have to search out God all by yourself. For one, the Bible is right in front of you. But more than that, God has given us one another, to question each other and prod each other, and work alongside each other in this path toward growth in Him.
