Inspirational stories of Links Players Fellowships.
March 2008
KOINONIA IN SALADO, TEXAS
It was dark outside on this cold February morning at 6:45 am. I believe that God has a way of speaking clearly
early in the morning. I was alone in my car anticipating the start of the Links Fellowship Bible study starting in fifteen minutes. Just talking to God. More importantly, listening.
I looked up the hill to
the clubhouse to see a few lights burning brightly in the predawn hour. And then I had this thought. Our group of Links players who would soon be assembled there are much like those lights. Sure, we are all jars of
clay, chipped and blemished, who were all once in the darkness. Now we are "lights" for Christ and useful to God as He sees fit in this little vineyard called golf ministry. True lights shine so brightly
in this dark, cold world. Truett Cathey, the founder of Chick-fil-A, once rebutted the observation that his restaurants are all closed and dark on Sunday, "Sunday is when our light shines the brightest."
And so it is with Links Fellowships scattered across the country. Men and women getting together in the early morning, late at night, and even on the golf course simply reflecting the light from the true
Source, our Savior and Treasure, Jesus. Our hope is that others will see this glorious light and not the chipped jars of clay and want to know more about why this light shines so brightly.
Something Spirit
filled and miraculous happens when followers of Christ get together. Our word "fellowship" is a translation of the Greek word "koinonia". At its roots, koinonia describes two or more people in
close association and exists through everyone who knows God through Jesus Christ.
"Some think of fellowship as drab gatherings at potluck dinners in fellowship halls. It is insipid next to the
red-blooded, full throttle corporate celebrations and nurturing body life that God designed for us. The deep peace and security that we experience in being known and accepted by a group, the celebrating that we do
together and the grace we offer and experience, are all foundational aspects of Kingdom loving." Seth Barnes
Clusters of stars in the heaven always shine brighter that single stars distant from each
other. So it is with the Christian life. And so it is in Salado, Texas. Six men gathered that morning in the clubhouse and simply opened God's word and talked about important things. It was not dramatic or
spectacular, but it was dynamic and oh so enriching. It allowed each of us in a very real way to be better reflectors of the real light.
That is what Links Fellowships (or should I saw koinonia) are all about.
"Jesus once again addressed them: 'I am the world's Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide
plenty of Light to live in.'" John 8:12 (The Message).
As I drove away that morning, I felt more alive and enlightened because of the light I experienced that morning.
